Electrician installing conduits and cabling ready for smart home automation

Home Automation Wiring Checklist Before Interiors

Hand this to your electrician before the walls close. Fifteen line items, none of them expensive, all of them impossible to add cheaply later.

    Quick answer

Before interiors begin, confirm five things in writing with your electrician: a neutral wire at every switch point, lighting split across separate circuits per zone, 8-module deep switch boxes at scene locations, a CAT6 network point in every room, and a cabinet in the utility for the hub, router and switch. Everything else in a smart home can be added later.

    The Checklist

Print this, walk the site with your electrician and tick each line.

    Power and switching

    The non-negotiables.

    • Neutral wire terminated at every switch box
    • Lighting split into separate circuits per zone (cove, spots, feature, task)
    • 8-module deep boxes at main scene locations
    • Two-way wiring at bedroom door and bedside
    • Dedicated circuits for AC, geyser and pump for load monitoring
    • Earth continuity verified at every point

    Network and control

The backbone that decides whether the system feels instant or laggy.

    • One CAT6 run per room, terminated in the utility cabinet
    • Access point locations in ceiling — corridor centre, not corner
    • Ventilated, powered cabinet for router, switch and hub
    • Camera cabling to main door, balcony and parking
    • Spare conduit from the cabinet to the living-room TV wall

    Curtains, sensors and safety

    Cheap now, disruptive later.

    • Power point above each curtain track pocket
    • Occupancy sensor point in utility, store and bathroom ceilings
    • Water leak sensor point near the utility drain
    • Doorbell and video door phone cabling to the main door

Common Mistakes We Fix on Site

These four appear in almost every project where automation was not planned in advance.

    • No neutral at switch points — the number-one blocker
    • Whole living room on one circuit, making scenes impossible
    • Shallow 4-module boxes that cannot hold retrofit modules
    • Router hidden inside a wooden shoe cabinet, killing Wi-Fi coverage

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do all smart switches need a neutral wire?+

Almost all reliable ones do. No-neutral switches exist but can flicker with LED loads and limit dimming, so specifying neutrals during wiring is always the safer choice.

How deep should switch boxes be for automation?+

Use 8-module deep boxes at scene and keypad locations. Standard shallow boxes often cannot accommodate a retrofit module behind the switch.

Is Wi-Fi enough or do I need cabling?+

Wi-Fi is enough for devices, but access points, cameras and hubs perform far better on cable. One CAT6 run per room during construction removes almost every future coverage complaint.
