Laser vs Lamp Projector — Which Should You Buy in 2026?

We install both Laser Projector and Lamp Projector systems every week across Hyderabad and Vijayawada. This is the honest, side-by-side comparison we give training-room, auditorium and home-cinema owners in our showroom — no brand loyalty, just what actually holds up in year 3.

    Where Laser Projector wins

Laser projectors turn on instantly, maintain brightness for 20,000+ hours, need no lamp replacements, run cooler and quieter, and hold colour calibration far longer. Total cost of ownership over 5 years is dramatically lower.

    Where Lamp Projector wins

Lamp projectors still win on outright purchase price — a mid-brightness lamp projector can be less than half the price of the equivalent laser. If the projector will only run 4–6 hours a week, a lamp unit is still economically defensible.

    Total cost of ownership

A lamp needs replacement every 3,000–5,000 hours at ~₹8,000–₹25,000 per lamp. Over 20,000 hours you'll buy 4–6 lamps plus filter service. Laser has zero of these costs — the differential usually pays back in 24–36 months of business use.

    Our recommendation

Almost all new commercial and premium home installs in 2026 should be laser. Reserve lamp projectors for genuinely light-duty portable use.

    • For classrooms, boardrooms, auditoriums, retail and daily-use home cinemas, laser is now the default. Lamp is only defensible for occasional-use portable projection.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do laser projectors dim over time?+

Yes — but far more slowly than lamps. Most laser projectors are rated to reach half-brightness at 20,000 hours; a lamp gets there in 3,000–5,000 hours.

Are laser projectors safer for classrooms?+

Modern laser projectors are Class 1 laser safe (same as a Blu-ray player). Ultra-short-throw laser models mean the presenter never looks into a beam.

Which laser projectors do you recommend?+

For most Indian rooms we specify Epson EB-L, Sony VPL-PHZ, BenQ LK / LU or Optoma ZH — matched to room size and ambient light.
